Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe says the club are ‘still working’ on new signings amid reports they have submitted an improved transfer bid for Marc Guehi.
The Magpies have seen several offers for the centre-back rejected by Crystal Palace, who are holding out for £70 million.
Newcastle are willing to match the Eagles’ valuation after proposing a deal worth up to that amount, according to The Times.
The Tyneside outfit are supposedly willing to make the unusual move of paying £65m up front, with an additional £5m in add-ons.

Guehi, who starred for England at Euro 2024, has two years left on his contract with little prospect of him signing a new deal.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup meeting with Nottingham Forest, Howe commented on the possible arrival of new signings before the transfer window closes on Friday.
“At the moment, keeping players is a success, as I sit here today,” the Newcastle boss said.
“In terms of incomings, that work is still going on behind the scenes. Everyone’s just trying their best to improve the squad so let’s see what happens.”
There has also been speculation surrounding the future of Kieran Trippier, who has been linked with a move to Everton. Howe is not concerned that the rumours will affect the right–back’s performances on the pitch.
“When you look at his performance on Sunday (against Bournemouth), that was a performance of someone that was focused and ready to help the team. I thought he did in every aspect,” he said.
“Kieran’s experience and know-how on the pitch seemed to have a galvanising effect on the group so I was pleased with the impact.
“There will be only football talk [with Trippier this week], no other talk. I think he’s in a good place.”
Asked if Newcastle can sign a right-winger and centre-back before the deadline, Howe responded: “Probably not, no.”
He continued: “I can understand the questions, but there’s always a level of respect that needs to be shown to the existing members of your squad.
“I respect every player we have in every position, so it’s not for me to answer. We’re trying to strengthen the group and make the right decisions and bring the right players in.”
