Inside just six minutes, as Girona turned on the style against Sevilla, Artem Dovbyk scored as many goals as Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin has in 17 Premier League games this season.
Sevilla took a shock early mere moments after kick-off away at the Montilivi on Sunday afternoon. But, make no mistake Luca Romero’s early opener did not lay the foundations for a coupon-busting turn-up, the relegation battlers handing the surprise La Liga challengers only a second defeat of a stunning campaign.
Artem Dovbyk made sure of that, Romero’s strike serving only to pull the tiger’s tail as Girona sank their teeth into sweet Andalusian flesh. In the space of just six minutes, the Ukraine international single-handedly turned 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead, drawing level with Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham in the Pichichi rankings in the process.
Everton and Burnley wanted Artem Dovbyk
Given the current political situation in Eastern Europe, there is something rather fairytale-like about two Ukrainian’s firing Girona to a La Liga triumph so unexpected it would have shades of Leicester City circa 2016 about it.
Alongside Viktor Tsygankov, Dovbyk has taken to Spanish football in scintillating form. And a return of 15 goals in 24 games across all competitions should be a source of much frustration for an Everton side who – 12 months ago this week – were being linked with a move of their own for the then-Dnipro talisman. A player comfortably outscoring both Calvert-Lewin and Beto at present (The Sun).
Striker inspiring Girona’s La Liga charge
Doybyk, an old-school, physical throwback of a centre-forward, has also been mentioned in conjunction with Nottingham Forest and Burnley in the recent past. Zorya Londonsk reported during the summer of 2022 that Burnley had submitted a bid in the region of £6 million.
18 months on, even if you slapped a fat zero on the end of that £6 million offer, you’d be on a hiding to nothing convincing Girona to part with a man who represents their best hope of upsetting the La Liga apple cart and bringing a Leicester-like miracle to Spanish soil.
